CRICKET: Gun Toowoomba cricketer Georgia Voll has received the latest accolade in her blossoming career.

After a stellar season that saw her represent Queensland at a representative level and make her first-class debut for the Fire, Voll was named as the states Youth Female Player of the Year.

“It’s pretty good to receive the award. I didn’t really expect it,” she said.

“I got the phone call on Tuesday and it was pretty exciting.

“It was meant to be presented last Saturday but unfortunately that couldn’t go ahead.”

Voll was able to claim the Katherine-Raymont Shield with Sandgate-Redcliffe, one of the few competitions that was able to conclude before the coronavirus situation gripped Australian sport.

She said it was a fitting honour for the side with how they performed throughout the season.

“It was a reward for a strong season and it was good to come away with the win in the end,” she said.

“It was a good effort by all the girls and it was good to have everyone back at the end, especially Moons (Beth Mooney) who scored a century in the final.

“We were lucky to get the final in the week before all competitions were closed.”

One of the highlights of Voll’s bright career came earlier this year when she was given her first Queensland Fire cap.

It turned out to be a debut to remember, taking two wickets in a victory over South Australia.

“I was actually at school doing trials to play for school when I missed a call from (Fire coach) Ashley Noffke,” she said.

“We were playing phone tag for a while before we got a hold of each other and he told me the news.

“I was really excited when I realised I was going to be making my debut.

“They weren’t two of my best wickets but you take them any way you can. It was good to get out there with the girls and get that experience.

“I’m obviously striving to play more games but you just have to take it in your stride with everything going on at the moment.”

Voll was set to represent the Australian U19s women’s side on their tour to South Africa this month, however the trip had to be cancelled due to the coronavirus situation.

For the moment Voll said she is focusing on stay fit and healthy in a time of uncertainty.

“I’ve been working hard with my brother (Tristan),” she said.

“We’ve got a home gym so we've been pushing each other there, and I’ve been running by myself as well.”
