WITH COVID-19 bringing sport to a standstill, Sports Darling Downs have been forced to make a difficult decision.
The not-for-profit organisation has cancelled all SDD related events and awards for 2020.
“While we recognise that this is extremely unfortunate for all of the athletes in our region we believe that due to the cancellation of local, state, national and international sporting competitions we cannot possibly select awards based on achievements for 2020,” SDD president Mick Smith said.
“My heart goes out to all our region’s athletes and teams.
“For some of them this year might be the first time they’ve been selected to represent the Darling Downs, Queensland or Australia.
“And now they might not get the honour of pulling on that special tracksuit – it’s heartbreaking what everyone is experiencing now.”
Speaking to The Chronicle, Smith took the opportunity to thank SDD’s many sponsors.
“We’ve only just made the decision to cancel the awards and the dinner but many of our sponsors have already pledged to continue their support,” Smith said.
“Business is doing it tough at the moment and we have decided that all sponsorship money received in 2020 will now be transferred for 2021 and therefore the next sponsorship payments will not be due until the year 2022.
“I think they (sponsors) still deserve praise for their generosity though.”
