FOOTBALL : Commitment and loyalty are the bedrock principals of the Stanthorpe football community.
Players rarely switch allegiances and the rivalries between clubs run deep.
All that will be cast aside, for a brief period of time, though when a select group of players lace up their boots to chase Toowoomba Football League glory.
Stanthorpe United will join the TFL Premier Men’s competition – playing all their game away from home.
“When the decision to not have a season, due to COVID-19 restrictions, was finalised we (Stanthorpe United) thought what can we do from here,” club representative Steve Mcevoy said.
“We approached the TFL and asked about joining their competition – just for the one season.
“I thought they’d put us in one of the lower divisions but by the end of the process we were in the Premier Men’s comp.”
Attracting players from other clubs wasn’t without its difficulties but after clearing some initial hurdles the side is confident they will be competitive.
“We’re playing as Stanthorpe United but only because it was easier to register that way,” Mcevoy said.
“We’re a united Stanthorpe team.
“Anyone that wanted to play was welcomed into the squad.
“The only thing that we asked of them was to lay down their swords for a few months so that we can give a positive account of what football in Stanthorpe is all about.
“After this season we’ll all go back to our respective clubs and it will be business as usual, but right now it’s about being positive and hopefully competitive.”
