RACING: You’d be forgiven for thinking the Ipswich Turf Club turned into Clifford Park on Labour Day.
Toowoomba trainers made the public holiday meeting their own on Monday, taking wins in six of the seven events on the card.
Tony and Maddysen Sears led the way with a winning double, with further victories to Jackie Crompton, Steven Tregea, Michael Frappell and Lindsay Hatch.
The Sears partnership started the day in the best possible way, with Queen Dazzler ($2.10 fav) making a winning debut in the Labour Day Cup (1350m).
The two-year-old jumped a touch slow, but was able to muster early speed in the small field to find the front.
Nothing else got a look in, as jockey Michael Cahill coasted to the line on the filly to score by three and a half lengths.
The double was again brought up in impressive fashion, with Terrius ($4.40) breaking his maiden at start seven.
Cahill took up the running with the gelding and much like his stablemate, never looked like being run down, going on to score by four lengths.
Earlier in the card, Spiritomo defied an alarming betting drift to get off the mark at her second start, with the Lindsay Hatch-trained filly scoring by three quarters of a length in the QTIS Two-Years-Old Maiden Plate (800m).
The juvenile opened up in the red before drifting out to an SP of $3.80, however that didn’t prove an issue, as Spiritomo found a strong kick in the straight to score for Andrew Mallyon.
Michael Frappell’s Gotthere was another to break her maiden, turning around a poor start to her career with a strong frontrunning display to claim the Labour Day Maiden Plate (800m).
She made full use of an inside barrier to hold the fence and the lead approaching the bend, before shaking off rivals to score by a neat length.
A hotly contested QTIS Three-Years-Old Handicap over the sprint trip of 800m saw the Jackie Crompton-trained Mocking ($6) break through for a deserved victory.
After finding herself in the placings at her past three outings, the filly was able to go one better, prevailing by a head to a fast-finishing Magic Trick ($3.70).
Flaunt ($9) rounded out the memorable day for the Clifford Park contingent in the final event on the card for trainer Steven Tregea.
The mare came from near last at the 400m mark to defy the pattern of on-pace horses scoring, flashing home down the outside to win by a long neck from odds-on favourite Dynamic Thinker ($1.90).
# After a fortnight on the sidelines, racing is set to return to Clifford Park this Sunday.
Toowoomba hasn’t hosted a meeting since April 18, with the Toowoomba Turf Club again boosted by strong nominations.
A total of 228 horses have nominated across the 10-race program. Should acceptances hold up, there remains the possibility of extending the card by a further two races.
The Downs will feature further action with Dalby on Saturday.
