HOCKEY: The Toowoomba U15s girls indoor hockey has returned home following a strong showing at the Indoor State Championships in Maryborough.

The girls capped a strong showing in division one, defeating Ipswich in their opening game before a close lose to the home side, one of the powerhouses of the tournament.

A win over Brisbane South in the crossover game set up a playoff with Ipswich, with a draw seeing them claim fifth overall.

Coach Dan Burke said he was proud of the way the girls were able to adapt

“All of the girls play outdoor hockey as well during that season, and their indoor game has gone from strength to strength,” Burke said.

“It’s starting to show with results at state championship level.

“A couple of our younger team members were stepping up from the U13s and they really shone with their commitment and determination.

“It was good to expose them to this sort of competition for this time next year.

“Some of the older girls in the group really took up leadership roles in the side, and they made Toowoomba and myself very proud.”
Further to the success of the girls, Burke said they received the utimate compliment from other teams.

“I had multiple people approach me about the skills and talents of our players,” he said.

“All of our games attracted spectators from other areas because of the intensity and quality they brought onto the pitch.”

The result continues a strong period for junior Toowoomba sides at state championships.

The U15s boys finished fifth, while the U13s girls took sixth and the U13s boys finishing in fifth.
