FOOTBALL : Pride comes before a fall, and the South West Queensland Thunder believe their Ipswich rivals will fall once more this weekend.

The Thunder plays host to the Western Pride in their round 3 FQPL clash, and striker Brodie Welch is confident his side can record a win.

“We were good against Holland Park,” he said.

“The boys at the back were solid, and we played well.

“We probably should’ve put them away early – we had enough chances, but their keeper was really up for it.

“If we can sharpen up in the final third, get that last pass a little better, I think we will score plenty this season.

“We got a win over them (the Pride) in pre-season, so hopefully we can one over them again.”

Making his debut in the Thunder’s 2-0 win over the Hawks, Welch, who transferred from Toowoomba Football League club Willowburn FC, said he was enjoying the step up in competition.

“I’ve learned pretty quickly that you have to be spot on in everything,” Welch said.

“Your passing has to be accurate, your first touch has to be great, even when you’re applying pressure upfront you have to make sure you’re moving the right.

“Any mistake you make is punished which is what happened to us against Rovers.

“It’s worth it though, when you get game time it’s really satisfying because you know you’ve worked hard and earned your spot.”

The Thunder women were set to play the Pride, however the Ipswich-based side announced its withdrawal from the NPLQW on Thursday. The men kick-off at 6pm tonight at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
