FOOTBALL : New recruit Brodie Welch kicked off his Thunder career in style at the weekend.
The striker, who signed from TFL club Willowburn in the off-season, scored a brace in his FQPL debut.
Welch's combination with Anthony Grant was too much for the Western Pride who lost the FQPL match 5-0.
"It was a great result for us. I thought we looked really good right across the park," Thunder keeper Jace Hudson said.
"One of our focuses in the off-season was to tighten up defensively and we have done that so far.
"Ivor (Prasad) says if you don't concede you can't lose a game."
Grant, who also scored twice in the match, opened the scoring for the Thunder in the 20th minute.
Pressure from Welch forced Pride goalkeeper Tom Lynch into an error and Grant guided the ball home.
Grant then provided just five minutes later - squaring the ball to Welch who scored from close range.
Buoyed by the early goals the Thunder pushed forward in search of third but were unable to add to their tally before halftime.
"Anthony (Grant) and Brodie (Welch) were great for us upfront," Hudson said.
"Once we settle into our matches, get our structure, the next goal is to apply that pressure upfront.
"We did that and scored goals as a result."
After the halftime break it was another TFL signing, Veco Serugo, who played a leading role in the Thunder's goals.
Serugo took advantage of the time and space given to him by a lacklustre Pride midfield to play key passes in the lead up to his side's third and fourth goals.
Grant (62nd) and Welch (76th) added their second goals before Italian Pasquale De Vita scored his first Thunder goal in injury time.
