INDOOR CRICKET: A quartet of St Ursula’s College students are set to take their talents to Melbourne.

The four girls were selected to represent Queensland in the Indoor Cricket National Championships to be held at Casey Stadium in June.

Keali Bullen, Olivia Bennett and Jasmine Lewis were chosen in the U17s girls division, with Rachael Lewis in the U22s women.

Their selection comes as a result of impressing at the zone trials in Beenleigh last month, where they were able to put their best foot forward.

“They selected us on how we adjusted to different situations in a game,” Rachael said.

The involvement of all four girls in the indoor scene comes from a background in traditional cricket.

“Pretty much all of us played outdoor and we all started playing indoor as a fun sport and it just went from there,” Lewis said.

“It was fun, a bit more intense and action-packed,” Bullen said.

The latest selection continues a strong involvement at the state level for the quartet, who have fostered their trade through the Toowoomba Dragons system.

The championships run from June 26-July 10, with the girls looking forward to the chance to travel and play a sport they love.

“For me personally I just want to go away and enjoy the carnival, and if it goes further than that’s good,” Bennett said.

“The World Cup was cancelled because of everything going on, but they will still probably select a merit team,” Lewis said.

“You’re playing against a much higher level of competition than what you’re used to, so a lot of it is doing the best you can against that and improving your skills.”

INDOOR CRICKET WORLD CUP CANCELLED

The decision was made by the World Indoor Cricket Federation to cancel the 2021 World Cup.

Originally scheduled for last year in Melbourne, the event was postponed until this year due to the situation regarding COVID.

A statement from the WICF reads:

“Amateur international sport has probably been hit hardest by COVID-19 situation.

Currently most countries that would be attending World events are in some sort of lockdown so it is an untenable or us to hold these events.

Our hope for 2021 is that we will see some international test series between countries that are close.”

Toowoomba’s Lyle Teske was named as captain of the Australian indoor cricket team in January last year.
