WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: Toowoomba’s Hayden Siebuhr is gearing up for the opportunity of a lifetime on the international circuit.

Siebuhr will again don the national colours later this month, chosen in the Australian U23s side to compete in the Kitakyushu Champions Cup in Japan, beginning tomorrow.

His selection marks the second time away with the U23s group, and is a fitting reward following on from a challenging start to 2019.

“At the start of the year I had a spinal shunt put in my back, so there was a fair bit of recovery time with that,” Siebuhr said.

“It took a good three months before I could get into full training again and get into the swing of things.

“I had to work hard to get back to where I was previously and try to improve on that, and now I’m hoping we can do the best we can in Japan.”

Siebuhr’s inclusion in the squad came off the back of a strong showing at a training camp and SLAM Down Under Festival last month in Shellharbour and Wollongong respectively.

In what was a challenging week, he said he was happy with how he showcased himself as he prepares to represent Australia once again.

“It was probably one of the toughest weeks of my life, and there was a real competition for spots,” he said.

“The conditioning side of things was challenging with hill pushes and tough sessions.

“It’s my second tour away with the U23s after the World Championships in 2017 in Toronto.

“This is my first sort of international competition for quite a while, so I know I’ve got a lot of improving to do to keep up with the boys.”

It continues a strong 2019 for Siebuhr, who was a part of the Queensland Spinning Bullets side that finished runners up in the NWBL.

The Kitakyushu Champions Cup commences tomorrow, with Australia taking on teams from Canada, Germany and Japan.
