FOOTBALL : A familiar name will return to the Toowoomba Football League senior ranks this season.
South Toowoomba Hawks will lace up their boots in 2020 in the men’s and women’s competitions.
The club’s confirmed a senior men’s team will return to the Conference Division and the club may field a team in the Premier Men’s Division depending on player availability.
“We will be fielding at least one senior men’s team this season,” Hawks president Tony Watkins said.
“We’re currently talking to a community club with players who are interested in playing, possibly in the Premier Division, as well.
“What happens there will depend on player availability as well as a few other factors.
“It’s important to us as a club that any one we bring in fits with our values and focus.
“We’re a family club. We want everyone from the players and officials to the supporters and family to enjoy and feel comfortable being part of this club.”
Hawks’ focus is on creating a pathway for its juniors and they value a “family first” attitude, according to Watkins.
“We’ve been focused on rebuilding and strengthening our juniors for a while now,” he said.
“Now we want to create a pathway for them into the senior ranks and beyond.
“We’ve got some great juniors at the club, led by the likes of 16/17 Hammers and 14/15 Hornets, and we want offer all of them something more.
“The 15-17 year bracket is tricky because you often lose players to other commitments, and we have lost players to other Toowoomba clubs.
“We’re obviously happy to see them continuing to play football, but ideally we’d like to see them playing in Hawks orange.”
Early numbers are looking good but the club is open to more players signing on.
“We’re very excited to be entering the senior ranks again,” Watkins said.
“It’s probably been four or five years since we’ve had a senior men’s team and even longer for the women.
“We have nearly 20 players in the women’s team including Melony Baker who will be player/coach.
“The men will play as the Blades and the numbers there are looking really solid.
“We’re happy to welcome extra junior and senior players to the club though.”
