FOOTBALL : Eager to strengthen its ties with “grassroots football” the Brisbane Roar will head to Highfields this weekend.

The three-time A-League champions are conducting a holiday camp for under-8s to U13s.

Earlier this year the Roar finalised plans to brings skills development and talent identification programs to Toowoomba with this weekend’s camp offering an insight into those programs.

“Football Queensland have been very active this year, particularly during the COVID-19 shutdown, to establish a better connection with the grassroots football community,” Highfields FC coaching co-ordinator Stef Hlaca said.

“That is exciting for everyone involved in football and it is great to see the Brisbane Roar doing something in that same space.

“The Roar’s philosophy, how they coach and approach the game is unique.

“They’re certainly going to bring their own style and that’s exciting.

“Players and coaches involved in these programs will learn a lot.”

The Roar have partnered with Toowoomba Anglican School (skills development program) and Highfields FC (talent identification), however both programs are open to everyone.

“The skills development program is about introducing new young players to the game and the talent identification (program) is about further developing players,” Hlaca said.

“The end goal is to produce players who join the Brisbane Roar but at the same time it is more than that.

“Only a small percentage of players will reach that level.

“These programs are about developing players to help strengthen the game at all levels – at their individual clubs, the Toowoomba competition, the NPL and beyond.

“That is why we are encouraging everyone to sign up for this camp and see what it is all about.”
