RUGBY LEAGUE: Toowoomba’s Emily Young has taken the next step in her rugby league journey.
Young was recently announced in a 36-woman camp squad prior to the Indigenous All Stars fixture in February next year, as she continues to push for selection in the final side to take on the Maori All Stars.
It continues a strong rise for the utility back, who made the move from the Toowoomba Valleys Fillies in the BRL and representative duties with the South West Mustangs last season, transitioning south of the border to the South Sydney Rabbitohs to play in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership.
Starting out the season at halfback, Young was shifted to the interchange, before playing on the wing and finishing out the season at five-eighth, playing in eight of the Rabbitohs’ 10 games.
Should Young be successful in earning selection in the final squad, it will mark her second appearance in the representative fixture.
Her first came in 2017 alongside Western Mustangs Fillies teammates Samartha Leisha and Molly O’Connell.
Leisha went on to represent the side again last year at AAMI Park.
This year’s side will again be coached by former Parramatta, South Sydney and Sydney Roosters player Dean Widders, who told NRL.com that this group is among the best he has worked with.
“We’re fortunate to have some incredible athletes across our game and the current crop of female Indigenous players is the best I’ve seen in my time,” Widders said.
“It’s a really exciting time for our game and for our community and I’m so proud to support this group of talented women as they showcase the very best of rugby league on and off the field.”
