RUGBY LEAGUE: As the women’s game continues to evolve, the next step has been taken with the introduction of the QRL Women’s Premiership (QRLW) from 2020.
Eight teams have been announced for the inaugural season of the open statewide competition, and our best talent from Toowoomba and the Downs has the chance to be a part of history.
The Central region will be represented by the Central Queensland Capras, and players from the region are encouraged to put in an expression of interest for the side.
Central Division region manager Rob Crow said it was essential for the region to have representation to ensure players
“Central wanted to have that involvement with a team out of the division that all women were able to take part in,” Crow said.
“QRL requested a team operate under the Capras or Sunshine Coast Falcons banner. After discussions with both clubs we thought the best option at this point in time was the Capras.
“Logistically it will be difficult, but the Central Division input is to make funds available to attend pre-season and some in-season training so players are not disadvantaged
“We felt that if we weren’t involved in the competition somewhere in our division, our competitions that have steadily grown would’ve taken a backwards step.
“If these players can’t get the opportunity to play at the highest level in our division, they would go elsewhere.”
Players from Toowoomba and surrounding areas are familiar with the rigours of top-line women’s football, with the Valleys Fillies competing in division one of the BRL over the past two seasons.
Despite the struggles the team endured, Crow said having that experience would put them in good stead for the years ahead.
“We’re very interested as they have played at that level and know what’s in front of them,” he said.
“Combined with a large number of rep players in our region, we’re confident we can enter this competition with a very strong team right from the word go.
“We encourage all players (from the Toowoomba region) to make themselves available and we will work out the logistics to make the team work.”
A benefit of the competition is the presence of NRLW scouts observing games, something that Crow said can drive players.
“All games will be able to be seen, and scouts from the NRLW will be able to observe players,” he said.
“Everyone has been getting excited and they are very keen to play at the highest level.”
