RUGBY LEAGUE: Toowoomba is inching closer to having another talent in the NRL, with Tristan Powell earning a big off-season opportunity.
Powell played his junior football with the Goondiwindi Boars, before moving to Toowoomba to join St Mary’s College and Southern Suburbs.
The forward joined the Burleigh Bears in the Hastings Deering Colts competition this season after signing a development contract with the Gold Coast Titans.
In a big boost, the Titans announced that Powell would join the extended training squad with six others as a train and trialist.
That means he will get to spend periods of time with the NRL squad as they prepare for the upcoming 2020 season, as well as the opportunity to push his claims for a spot in the pre-season trial matches.
That includes training alongside former Brothers junior and Harristown SHS student Ash Taylor.
The Titans pre-season schedule is yet to be released.
Powell had an impressive first season with the Bears in the U20s competition.
Such was the impression he made, Powell was chosen to represent Queensland at the U18s state level at Suncorp Stadium prior to the first State of Origin match.
