RACING: Troy Pascoe and Mark Currie ensured Toowoomba’s trainers stayed in the winner’s circles at Sunday’s South West Metro Zone meeting at Ipswich.
Top Ruler ($5) got off the mark at his fifth career start with an impressive finish to score in the Maiden Plate (1515m) by a neat length.
The Pascoe-trained gelding was forced to work early after being caught wide, and had the task of trying to run down Flag Raiser ($2.70 fav) who had it all his own way out in front.
Nick Keal had to push along Top Ruler before straightening for home, before he gradually wore the leader down, taking the lead in the final 100m to score.
Despite overracing badly in the early stages of the QTIS Three-Years-Old Handicap (2170m), Mishani Secret ($3.30) proved far too strong in claiming her third win.
Matt McGillivray made his move at the 500m mark, sweeping three-wide to try and run down the leaders, before going on to score by three lengths.
Currie went close again with Rerun ($21), who went within a half length of taking out the Benchmark 62 Handicap (1515m).
The five-year-old was badly held up in the home straight before getting out late to run third.
Michael Nolan’s Miss Cavallo ($6) flew home down the middle of the track, but was beaten by the post to run second by a short half-head.
The next meeting for the zone will take place at the Gold Coast on Friday, while Darling Downs-based horses will be eligible for the Dalby meeting on Saturday.
