Orsetto no teddy in tight finish

THE Ipswich visitor found plenty in the straight to claim an overdue victory at Clifford Park.

Orsetto ridden by Michael Hellyer wins race 1 at Clifford Park. Saturday, 4th Jul, 2020.

RACING: It's been a while between drinks for Orsetto, but the Ipswich visitor found his perfect race at Clifford Park on Saturday evening.

The Brian Costello-trained gelding won his at his first race start at Gatton before a winless run stretching nine races.

That streak was ended in the Mitavite Ratings Band 0-55 Handicap (1000m), with Orsetto ($4.40 fav) fending off a late charge to make it win number two.

Jumping from an inside barrier, Michael Hellyer got off to a flyer on the three-year-old and held the front.

Despite being clearly headed at the top of the straight by Oakfield Geronimo ($19), Orsetto lifted over the concluding stages, scoring by a head to a closing Primmiscuous ($8.50).

Costello said the quick thinking of Hellyer proved the difference, as he relished the drop in class.

"It wasn't our plan to lead on him, but Michael said that he got there so easily that he decided he wouldn't give it up," Costello said.

"The plan to settle off the speed, but I knew if he backed up from his previous run (he'd go close).

"He was probably racing down in class a little bit on what he had previously, but it's still hard to win no matter where you go.

"He's been an honest horse. After he won his first start I thought he might go on a little more quickly, but he's been lovely to do things with."

Impressive juvenile Mishani Spirit ($3.30 fav) had just one start since 2018 heading into her assignment in the Taylor Building Group QTIS Three-Years-Old Handicap (1000m), but that wasn't an issue.

The dual two-year-old winner, who went around in a Group Three race at her third start, showed she hasn't lost a step, pouncing on a hot field to score by 1 ½ lengths from a gallant Spinning Spirit ($13).

In the upset of the night, Red Wabbat ($3.80) caused a boilover, downing hot favourite Kirra Lass ($1.30) in the Barrier Reef Pools QTIS Two-Years-Old Handicap (870m).

Nathan Fazackerley got to the front on the hotpot and looked to be travelling on the home turn, before finding little in the home straight, with Red Wabbat surging home to win by a long neck.

After rising earlier in the day at Eagle Farm, James Orman made his trip over the range a worthwhile one.

Orman's solitary ride on the program, Mittere ($2.05 fav) in the Get Out Stakes Class 3 Handicap (870m), was a winning one, running down Easy Come ($2.50) to claim a ½ length victory.

# AT Chinchilla, apprentice jockey Ty Wheeler made a winning debut, scoring aboard Stryking Princess in the QTIS Maiden Plate (1030m).

The Garry Schwenke-trained filly scored by three lengths to break her maiden.

Hard Stride relished a huge drop in class for trainer Jason Judge, taking out the Open Hanidcap (1200m).

Despite being handed 61.5kg after the claim from Isabella Rabjones, the nine-year-old found enough to win.
