LAWN BOWLS: The future of Australian lawn bowls is a teenage boy who lives in Dalby.
Representing North Toowoomba Bowls Club, 16-year-old Jake Rynne beat Queensland’s best bowlers to secure the Queensland Champion of Champions title at the weekend.
In what Bowls Queensland officials have described as one of the best finals series in decades, Rynne produced two massive results on his way to the final.
Rynne beat the state’s top ranked bowler and close friend Jacob Nelson 25-24 and replicated the result against Nick Cahill on the first day of the finals.
“Jacob and I are really good mates and have played a lot of bowls together,” Rynne said.
“It meant we couldn’t exploit each other’s weaknesses.
“He jumped out to a bit of an early lead and I really had to work my way back into the game.
“Thankfully, I got it back to square (24-24) eventually and got over the line on the last end.
“Nick’s another guy I’ve played a lot of bowls against as he’s only a year or so older.
“I started slow again, and he was playing some unbelievable bowls.
“I had to take a few punts and luckily they paid off, and I got the win again.”
After two tough opening games, the Emerging Australian Jackaroo team member then crushed Bundaberg’s Keith Whalley 25-14 in the final.
“My mindset was a lot better on the Sunday morning,” Rynne said.
“I got out to a bit of lead in the early ends and kept on with it.
“It’s a pretty amazing feeling to win it.”
