RUGBY LEAGUE : Newtown Lions will record another first in their storied TRL return on Friday, February 28.
The club’s women’s team will line up against Brothers in a trial game at Glenholme Park kicking off at 6pm.
Coach Cameron Moodie said his team is looking forward to the clash.
“They’re all very excited,” Moodie said.
“We’ve been training since before Christmas and they’re eager to get out there and play.
“It’s our first game and for some of them it will be their first league game as well.”
Moodie said the club has been careful not to set any unrealistic expectations or goals ahead of the trial game.
“We’ve had good numbers at training and everyone is working hard,” he said.
“The girls have been doing regular gym sessions as well as work on the field and I’ve noticed big improvements.
“The plan for this game is to try out a few combinations and give the players a chance to try out different positions on the field so they can see what it’s like and maybe decide where they’d like to play.”
Moodie said taking up the coaching reins at Lions is also an exciting opportunity for him.
“I was a Newtown junior and played seniors for the club before they folded,” he said.
“I played seniors for a few club after that but I was always a Lion and came straight back when they started up again.
“Guys like Paul Dolley and the rest of the committee deserve credit for what they’ve done the past few years.
“Personally I’m enjoying coaching the women’s team, it’s a good experience, and I’m looking forward to the season.”
