AUSSIE RULES: The coronavirus pandemic has forced an immeasurable shift in the sporting landscape across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs.
AFL Darling Downs is one of a number of organisations that has seen staff temporarily stood down amid the ongoing crisis.
However, game development and talent manager Jeff Neumann is making the most of a challenging situation.
With a wealth of experience in the coaching ranks, including at the state and national level, Neumann has taken on a new venture to get through the times ahead.
He has joined One On One Football as a private coach, keeping him involved in the sport he loves.
“While I’ve been stood down, I’ve been looking for some extra income,” Neumann said.
“Being stood down is one of those things that you understand it’s not the end of the line, but they are uncertain times,”
“I’ve had that experience of coaching at a higher level, and thought this would be a great opportunity to apply and provide private coaching among the large footy contingent that we have in Toowoomba and surrounds.”
Like many, Neumann was caught off guard by the severity of the current situation, and the impact it would have not just on sport, but on society.
“I was in shock like a lot of people as to just how big this has turned out to be,” he said.
“Not just the impact on the footy community, but everyone.
“We probably thought that it wouldn’t be that big in February, but it got quite serious in March, and now it’s a matter of playing our role to stay at home.”
Current government restrictions allow for exercise with no more than two people, something which isn’t a problem for Neumann to provide coaching.
“It’s one of those guidelines from the, relevant authorities, but the current climate suits the one-on-one model,” he said.
“It’s all about trying to develop those players in particular areas.
“There’s been a lot of interest so far, and when football does resume, these players will be ready to go, having worked on those little areas or strengthened another.”
Neumann said the coaching would be suitable for any current or prospective players from AusKick level through to seniors.
“I’ve had the experience over different levels, and if someone wants to get private coaching, this caters for someone to strengthen their game, be it for a beginner or even someone wanting to learn the game,” he said.
