BASKETBALL: On the wrong end of a tight finish last week, the Mustangs have bounced back in a nailbiter of their own in the Toowoomba Basketball League.

Looking to open up breathing space between second and third, the Washed on James Mustangs called on all their energy reserves to overcome the Westridge Warriors by 74-71 at Clive Berghofer Arena.

With star point guard JaKobe Hunter returning home to Cairns, it took an inspired performance for the Mustangs to quell a late charge from their opponents.

The Mustangs held a 21-point lead at the main break, before their advantage was cut to just two heading into the final term on the back of a 26-3 run by the Warriors.

They held solid, with strong defence down the stretch guiding them home, much to the delight of coach Mitch Wormald.

“Our personnel is changing week by week, but we really hung in there on Monday night,” Wormald said.

“The guys were pretty gassed, but they remained cool under pressure at the end of the day and they showed discipline to close it out.

“JaKobe has gone back to Cairns and we’ll miss him. The boys know that it’s next man up in our team and everybody is ready to step up.

“We had some great contributions from different places. Joe Topalov has had a great tournament for us and Isaac Wormald was great as well. Both had 14 points.”

Joseph Johnson led the way with a game-high 24 points, while Thon Angui had 15 for the Warriors.

The night’s other game saw the Southern Cross Bricklaying Eels maintain their unbeaten start to the TBL season with a big 116-85 defeat of the Pump Panthers.

Manylok Malek was unstoppable once again in dropping a game-high 36 points, while Jason Ebneter had 29 in just his second game of the season.

STANDINGS

1. Eels (5-0, 126%)

2. Mustangs (3-2, 109%)

3. Warriors (1-4, 90%)

4. Panthers (1-4, 83%)
