RUGBY LEAGUE: The Men of League Foundation has been involved with challenging circumstances and even tougher players before.

But with the coronavirus pandemic hitting the community hard and putting a halt to most sports.

Men of League Toowoomba region wellbeing manager Andrew O’Brien said that this is a tough a time as many have endured, as the foundation looks to provide as much assistance as possible.

“We use Facetime and do virtual visits to speak to people now which has been a really good initiative,” O’Brien said.

“With this catastrophe, help comes to your door.

“We’re an event management charity that thrives on its events to raise funds.

“It’s so important for us to keep going to be able to keep helping people.”

“We really want to get the message out there that there is a lot of help and support in the rugby league fraternity.

“It’s something that we didn’t have many years ago. To have the one-sport charity is tremendous.”

The impact has been felt for more than those on the field.

O’Brien said that the league community across a number of facets had been impacted by the pandemic.

“We need to keep in mind that all levels, from grassroots to the NRL, are effected by this,” he said.

“There are many employees, not to mention those in leagues clubs.

“Sports medicine staff and referees get paid, so it’s a tough time for everyone, and if they want a chat, they can contact us.”

Last year was a special one for the foundation in terms of the sheer number of visits they were able to accomplish.

O’Brien said it was important for them to continue addressing key areas, particularly in times to come.

“Last year were the most visits we’ve ever done,” he said.

“Suicide in indigenous youth is really in our forefront at the moment and what we’ve been trying to keep an eye on.

“Rugby league is a big chunk of people’s lives, especially those who rely on income.

“Most clubs are sponsored by licensed establishments, and next year that sponsorship dollar could be just a fraction, which is going to be hard to help clubs move forward.

“The Men of League is there for the game and its supporters. There are a number of wellbeing officers from Roma to Goondiwindi and we’re there to help out.”

For those wanting to join the Men of League Foundation, memberships start from just $25.
