FOOTBALL : A new chapter is about to be written in Toowoomba Grammar School’s proud sporting history.

Junior students will wear TGS blue and gold in the Toowoomba Football Leagues junior competition this weekend.

“Soccer has really grown in the senior school the last few years,” TGS junior school sports master Brendan Doherty said.

“Now we want to build on that success and grow the game right through the school.

“Rugby has a very proud history and sense of tradition here – we’d like to develop soccer in the same way.”

Enthusiasm among the junior ranks is high and Doherty has no doubt the teams will put their best foot forward.

“We have great coaches, facilities and students,” Doherty said.

“The best thing though is they (the kids) just love to play.

“They’re out there kicking a ball to each other very lunch break and building friendships along the way.”

Joseph Fernando, who will line up at left wing for his team, is hoping to find the back of the net this weekend.

“Hopefully I will score a few goals this season,” he said.

“The really fun part is being part of a team and playing with your friends.”
