RUGBY LEAGUE: The Western Mustangs have a fortnight to prepare for round one after their final trials at the weekend.
Hosting the Redcliffe Dolphins at Glenholme Park, the afternoon started with the visitors taking the spoils with a 16-12 victory in the U16s Cyril Connell Challenge.
They backed it up in the U18s Mal Meninga Cup, taking a 12-0 advantage before an unfortunate incident forced an early end to proceedings.
A Dolphins player suffered a leg injury in the closing stages of the first half, with the game unable to be restarted.
Both the U16s and U18s boys will now focus on the first round of QRL fixtures on March 6 against the Wide Bay Bulls in Bundaberg.
The U19s women kick off their campaign a week later against Central Queensland in Wandoan.
HAWKS FLY IN CABOOLTURE
Gatton started its 2021 season with a bang, scoring wins in three grades against the Caboolture Snakes at the weekend.
A-grade took out a convincing 28-8 victory and the open women came out on top 22-6 in their first outing.
The U18s prevailed 16-4, while the reserve grade men suffered a 20-10 defeat.
President Matt McDermott said it was a promising start to proceedings for the club.
“It all went really well,” McDermott said.
“The women played great. They were down 4-0 after five minutes but finished off nicely.
“The first half of the A-grade was a bit clunky. We were down 8-6 at halftime and ended up winning the second half 22-0.
“Our defence was really strong.”
