New schools join rugby competition

RUGBY : Two new schools will chase rugby union glory this season.

League powerhouse St Mary’s have signed up for the Darling Downs Super Schools Cup, with Highfields State Secondary College the other new face.

The pair will set their sights on upsetting reigning champions Faith Luthern College in the second year of the competition.

“It’s a very exciting time being able to play rugby again after COVID,” Faith Luthern College player Mathew Passfield said.

“We have lost a few players from last year because they graduated, but we have a lot of talent coming through.

“It will be tough. I think Scots will be good again and St Mary’s with their rugby league background will be tough as well.

“But we’d love to go back-to-back.”

Funding from the Ramsay-Rugby Australia Foundation has been vital to the success of the competition which targets non-traditional rugby schools.

“It’s another example of the hard work that is going on at Downs Rugby Limited,” general manager Matthew Hammond said.

“We can’t thank the Ramsay-Rugby Australia Foundation enough for their support which has helped us grow rugby by introducing it to non-traditional rugby schools.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to experience 15-a-side rugby and all it has to offer.”

The competition will run for six weeks from July 29 and also includes Mary MacKillop Catholic College, Scots PGC Warwick and Toowoomba Anglican School teams.
