Neers fall short in crossover fixture

BASKETBALL : The Toowoomba Mountaineers U18s boys have fallen agonisingly short in their bid to move up to the Premier League.

Competing in a crossover fixture against Brisbane Capitals Silver in the state's capital, the unbeaten Southern Cup ladder leaders fought gallantly but were edged out 90-88 in a thrilling contest.

Ngaakudzwe Ngorima led all scorers with a game-high 33 points, with Angus Scott scoring 17 and Ben Toohey adding 16 points.

The Mountaineers found themselves struggling early, as the Capitals opened up a commanding 27-15 lead through the first term.

Eventually they picked up the tempo and were able to work their way into the contest, cutting the defecit to just six at half-time.

Another strong quarter saw them tie things up with one quarter to play, however the division one side had too much in the end.
