CRICKET: This weekend the GPS cricket competition will turn pink for a good cause, and Toowoomba Grammar School is getting on board.

Across the grounds of Toowoomba, pink stumps will take centre stage and donations will be taken towards the McGrath Foundation to continue the fight against breast cancer.

TGS cricket coach Jed Sippell said it is a concept both the school, teams and families have thrown their support behind.

“It’s been running for a number of years now and is one event on the cricket calendar that the boys and their families have really gotten behind,” Sippell said.

“It allows them to bring forward and shine a light on what is a very good program for women that are facing breast cancer, from a care and treatment perspective.

“Leading into the day, we get the information out there to players and families.

“On the day itself there’ll be plenty of pink paraphernalia including stumps and equipment.

“Items will be sold on the day that represent the McGrath Foundation and some of the boys will be going around the grounds collecting donations.

“There’s over 400 in the cricket community at Grammar, and it’s always a good day in terms of how much funding we can raise.”

Throughout the day, TGS will take on Nudgee College across all grades.

With the First XI on the road, the Second XI will take up main fixture duties at Mills Oval from 8.15am.

Sippell said the support across the entire competition was strong, and believed it to be a proud part of the cricket community.

“It is one of those foundations that has become synonymous with cricket,” he said.

“Everyone has the chance to participate, and having Glenn McGrath as the front man, who is such a strong figure in Australian cricket, helps to keep that legacy going on.”

In First XI action, TGS is hoping to bounce back from a heavy defeat at the hands of The Southport School.

Nudgee College has faced a similar path to Grammar, with both sides sitting on 17 competition points and Nudgee also dropping its last two games.
