CRICKET: While their hopes of playing finals have been dashed, Darling Downs South West Queensland is looking to finish out the Lord’s Taverners competition season on a high.

With just two rounds remaining, DDSWQ have slipped out of post-season contention following three-successive defeats.

Over the tough stretch, the U16s side has mixed it with the top two sides in Pool A (Wynnum/Manly and Valley), and third-placed Western Suburbs in Pool B.

Despite the setbacks, coach Jason Fenwick hopes his side can dust themselves off and give a good account over the next fortnight.

“I’d love to see them all click,” Fenwick said.

“There’s been games where we’ve bowled and fielded really well and others where we have batted strongly.

“We just somehow haven’t managed to get it all together, so I really hope the boys can show what they are capable of over these last two games.

Fenwick praised the resilience his side has shown, including last week when defending a modest total as they fell by two wickets to Wests.

“We saw that on the weekend,” he said.

“They could’ve just rolled over and taken the defeat, but they fought hard and almost got the win.”

As for this weekend’s tussle against Sandgate-Redcliffe on Sunday, Fenwick hopes his batsmen can take a controlled approach.

“Unfortunately we seem to lose wickets in clumps, and can lose two or three in very quick succession,” he said.

“I’d like to see us get in, start again and build an innings get some partnerships going.”

HEAT HOPING HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF

Warwick’s Delissa Kimmince and the Brisbane Heat have the opportunity to move their season record into the positive when taking on the Sydney Sixers in a grand final rematch.

Currently the Heat sit in fourth spot with three wins and three losses, and can entrench themselves in the finals race with a victory.

The Heat were successful over the Sixers in the opening round of the season, scoring a dominant 92-run victory, Sydney’s only defeat so far.

Tomorrow’s match commences at 2pm and will be shown live on Kayo Sports.
