HOCKEY: Rangeville may have taken the spoils against Red Lion, but it wasn't without an almighty effort from the opposing goalkeeper.
Kristi Skuse was at her determined best in goal, thwarting a barrage from Rangeville during her side's 2-0 defeat in round two of the COVID Cup.
The performance drew praise from opposing coach Elke Swain, who was left in awe of her form.
"We had lots of chances, but Kristi had a blinder," Swain said.
"She always seems to when she plays against us. It's been about 10 years and hasn't changed a bit.
"Our girls put pressure on ourselves in trying to beat her. We will learn from that and try to fix that with some training drills and a bit more communication."
Both of Rangeville's goals came from the stick of Tammy Williams from penalty corners.
Swain said one of the benefits of the competition was giving people the opportunity to put themselves in these situations.
"We have a very different side and a few young players getting an opportunity that haven't stepped into A-grade before," she said.
"They're all handing it very well, and that's what I'm loving. All clubs are giving young ones a chance and they are relishing it."
In the men's fixture, Red Lion ensured it would square the ledger for the evening, coming away with a 3-1 victory.
Scores were tied at 1-all midway through the second quarter, before goals to Dylan Pember and Will Nielsen sealed the win.
Past High continued its hot form to start the COVID Cup, running out 3-0 winners over Norths.
Savannah Trapp scored in the closing stages of the first quarter, with Holly Gilbar and Paige Trapp finding the back of the net in the third to close out their second-straight win.
The Past High men gave them a clean sweep of Norths, with a late goal to Jack McKewen getting them over the line 2-1.
Micah Matthewson gave Norths a dream start with a third minute strike, with Jack Hawthorne levelling up minutes out from half time.
A draw was appearing more and more likely before McKewen's matchwinner five minutes from time.
