Coming into the weekend competition as one of the youngest sides, Darling Downs and South West Queensland was able to play above its experience.
Two T20 wins on Saturday set up a winner takes all 50-over clash with Wide Bay on Sunday, which was ultimately taken out by their opponents.
Coach Kieren Gibbs said the weekend has set a strong platform with youth on their side for years to come.
“The boys started off really strong on the Saturday with two good games, but unfortunately couldn’t produce in that final game,” Gibbs said.
“Our all-round team effort was good. Our co-captain Regan Hoger really stepped up and played that senior role. He led from the front with the bat and helped set up the two wins.
“Everyone did their job to the best of their ability. We had a really young side and we’re very proud of their efforts.
“Next year they’ll know the strength of the competition and the players in opposition teams, and their skill level will continue to rise. There’s no doubt they’ll have more confidence in the way they play their cricket.”
DDSWQ was rewarded for its consistent play across the weekend, with five players chosen in the South Queensland Country squad, which is a merit team this year due to COVID.
“It’s good to see Arshvir Singh chosen. He’s a Grammar boy playing with Souths and is just 16,” Gibbs said.
“Regan Hoger was chosen, Nick Brown and James Bidgood from Uni made it and Cody Walker from Diggers was there too.
“We’re all super proud of them getting into the squad.”
