CRICKET: They may have bowed out of finals contention a fortnight ago, but Darling Downs South West Queensland managed to close their Lord’s Taverners competition season out in style.
Following on from a road win over Sandgate-Redcliffe, the Downs was able to end the regular season with another victory, this time a 65-run over Northern Suburbs at Mills Oval.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, it looked to be a shaky decision through the opening phase of the contest.
The visitors struck at regular intervals, leaving DDSWQ under pressure at 4/61.
Then Arshvir Singh decided to take over the match, belting 14 boundaries on his way to a season-high 91 runs.
He linked strongly with the likes of Rex Tooley (27) and Paul Draheim (31) as they posted a strong total of 9/243.
It was again Singh that got it done with the ball in hand, finishing with figures of 4/45 as they were able to bowl Norths out in the 44th over.
Jem Ryan capped off a solid year with the ball by taking another two scalps.
The victory means DDSWQ finished the South Zone pool in sixth place on five wins and five losses, just one and a half wins behind second-placed Gold Coast.
They also played the role of spoiler, with Northern Suburbs missing out on a finals sport as a result of the defeat.
Tom Sippel finished the season as the club’s leading average runscorer at 43.67, while Ryan finished 10th overall in the competition with 15 wickets.
