RACING: Dayl March made his name in the trotting ranks, but now he has added another string to his bow.
The Warwick local enjoyed the rare feat of training a winner with his first ever starter at his home track on February 21, and he is hoping Secondofmay can replicate that today at the Gold Coast.
“It was a big thrill. I wasn’t really knowing what to expect from her,” March said.
“She had been working well and I just wanted her to put it all together. After the first 600m she was a couple of lengths last and I thought it could be embarrassing.
“She fought hard though, and it was a good ride by Jed (Hodge) and I was just glad to hear (racecaller) Anthony (Collins) say she won.”
The three-year-old holds a special pride of place for March, continuing a strong relationship with Warwick businessman Ray Bunch.
“Ray owned a share in Vegas Luck, the mother of Secondofmay,” he said.
“She did a tendon, so Ray brought her and didn’t have anywhere to put her, so he asked if I’d look after her.
“He sent the mare to Better Than Ready, I looked after her and he gave us a quarter share as a thank you which is how it all panned out.
“I’ve been doing the trotters for a lot of years. It’s more of a challenge with the thoroughbreds.
“Advice I got from a lot of people early was to not work them as hard as the trotters.”
Saturday’s eight-page racing guide, including day two of The Championships from Royal Randwick and Clifford Park’s night meeting appears in today’s edition of The Chronicle.
