AUSSIE RULES: A key institution has been restored to keep teenagers on the Downs involved in Aussie rules.
The Darling Downs Crows will fly once again in the U16s boys age group, playing in the competitive southeast Queensland competition.
AFLQ Darling Downs competition and club development manager Mitch Simpson said it would provide a pathway for teenage boys to continue playing in their age group.
“It’s about providing a participation opportunity for those kids wanting to play,” Simpson said.
“There was a plan to roll it out this year, however it was a bit challenging with COVID, so it is being rebooted next year.
“A number of years ago it gave kids the option to play on the Sunday after their Saturday club games.”
Simpson said it was hoped that the move would help to keep boys interested and participating in the sport.
“Currently we’re not in a space to have a fully fledged U16s competition, so this gives them the opportunity to keep playing on the Downs,” he said.
“At this age kids often choose between playing in Brisbane, playing senior football which can be a big step or not playing at all.”
Training and home games for the Crows in 2021 will be held in Toowoomba.
