HOCKEY: Brooke Thompson is currently enjoying her 21st year in the elite level of Toowoomba Hockey.

So there’s no better judge to determine the impact of the Club Glenvale Challenge on the local competition.

The Rangeville captain was drafted by the SQPS Scorers for the season, with the team currently sitting pretty at the top of the standings.

Thompson said they are deriving the benefit of a well-balanced squad.

“We have a team with a really young core group, mixed in with a few older girls in the team,” she said.

“It’s good to mix it up and have the chance to play with players you wouldn’t normally be able to team up with.

“It’s quite refreshing.”

Thompson said she is enjoying the chance to be able to have a mentoring role within the Scorers.

“For me it’s about passing on some of my knowledge of the game,” she said.

“I like trying to help these young players find their feet in the higher level of hockey that some of them haven’t been able to play.

“We’re prepared to chance our arm. We’ve thrown quite a few people in different positions and it’s good to see them step up.

“The young ones have held their own and been pretty impressive.”

The Scorers can continue their flawless start to the season when taking on the CS Vixens, who themselves picked up their first win last week.

“It’s been a solid start to the year, and the quality has been good,” she said.

“The pace of the game has been fast, faster than normal competition. It’s good to have the fresh legs out there. I’ve been impressed with the quality.

“Doing the basics right has been a big part of us going 2-0. We haven’t tried to do too much fancy stuff.”
