RUGBY LEAGUE: A group of keen young players will make a 1200km round trip tomorrow to take on a Toowoomba side in a special pair of fixtures.

The Mulga 11s team from western Queensland are heading to Herb Steinohrt Oval to take on a Toowoomba Barbarians side.

It marks the first time that the side, composed from the best players at the recent Mulga Carnival in Charleville, will head to Toowoomba to take on a local side.

QRL operations manager Lennie Currie said it was a fantastic initiative that had a number of benefits for both sides.

“They held a carnival with teams from Longreach, St George, Roma and more coming to play,” Currie said.

“They picked a team of the carnival and contacted us about organising a game.

“It’s the first time it’s happened and we’re hoping it can become a regular thing, and it gives some of our local players a game too.

“It fosters a bit of a relationship between Toowoomba and the area, and exposes the Mulga U11s to a little bit higher level of footy, and shows them what’s on offer in Toowoomba as well.”

The two games will be played at Herb Steinohrt Oval at 4pm tomorrow and 9am Sunday.
