A man involved in an attack which allegedly led to the death of an East Lismore man could soon learn his fate.
Tyrese Hickling, 20, fronted Lismore Local Court on Wednesday, in relation to three charges, including two charges associated with the death of Jesse Vilkelis-Curas.
Police allege Hickling was involved in an altercation near Hill and Park Streets, East Ballina, on December 23, 2019 which resulted in the death of the 24-year-old.
During the fight, police allege Mr Vilkelis-Curas suffered “catastrophic head injuries” and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital before being taken off life-support on Boxing Day and died.
Hickling has pleaded guilty to affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in the company of others.
A backup charge of common assault will also be considered in the Lismore District Court.
He is not charged with manslaughter, although his co-accused Bryson Larsen-Tai has pleaded guilty to that.
Hickling appeared in custody via video link while his solicitor Rachael Thomas said party negotiations into a separate charge for stealing property less $2000 was likely to be resolved imminently.
“My friend and I are in the position that there are only two sentences in the agreed facts that remain in dispute,” she said.
However, the two remaining charges required an adjournment, due to Hickling’s association with co-accused Bryson Larsen-Tai.
Ms Thomas stated the charges were headed to committal for sentence and said the volume of the case had led to a delay.
“The statements of agreed facts is some nine pages long,” she said.
“Therefore, I require some further time to take instruction on those facts.”
Co-accused Larsen-Tai also fronted court on Wednesday, where it was heard his fact sheets were still being negotiated between parties.
All of Hickling’s matters were listed for adjournment and he will appear again before Lismore Local Court on July 14.
