Duo, Tyrese Hickling and Bryson Larsen-Tai, to face court together over Shaws Bay fatal attack

A man involved in an attack before the death of an East Lismore man will learn his fate alongside his co-accused.

Tyrese Hickling, 20, had his matters heard before Lismore Local Court on Wednesday, July 14 in relation to three charges, including two charges associated with the death of Jesse Vilkelis-Curas.

Police allege Hickling was involved in an altercation near Hill and Park Streets, East Ballina, on December 23, 2019 which resulted in the death of the 24-year-old.

During the fight, police allege Mr Vilkelis-Curas suffered “catastrophic head injuries” and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital before being taken off life-support on Boxing Day and died.

Hickling has pleaded guilty to affray and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in the company of others.

He was not charged with manslaughter, although his co-accused Bryson Larsen-Tai has pleaded guilty to that.

During his Wednesday mention, Hickling’s Legal Aid solicitor Katherine Brady asked the matter be adjourned to align with Larsen-Tai’s next mention.

According to the DPP prosecutor, it would take two weeks to settle the facts.

The court had previously heard both men’s matters will likely progress to Lismore District Court.

Given that, Magistrate Jeff Linden adjourned the matter for July 28.
