OUR SAY: City to lose part of identity if Weis shuts

IF the Toowoomba Weis factory closes, more than 90 residents lose their jobs and the city loses part of its identity.

THE Weis ice cream factory is synonymous with Toowoomba, and Unilever's decision to shutter it by the end of next year is absolutely the wrong one.

Our city has lost too many industries that don't just anchor the employment sector - they shape what we're known for and who we are.

Weis is a hugely successful brand that was proudly grown here, and I'm sure we all would agree it is proudly part of Toowoomba's identity.

If we lose it, more than 90 residents lose their jobs and we lose part of that identity.

The calls from all levels of government need to be loud and clear, and everything must be done to try and turn this devastating decision around.
