ONE of Australia’s finest cricket captains graced Toowoomba with his presence, as Steve Waugh flew in to support teams taking part in the popular Captain’s Ride fundraiser.
Waugh, a legend of 168 Test matches and more than 10,000 runs, joined McGrath Real Estate for a special event at Fitzy’s yesterday.
The luncheon was designed to raise money for the three McGrath riders on the Steve Waugh Foundation’s Captain’s Ride, a six-day on-road cycle tour starting from Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport from November 4.
Money raised helped support Australian children suffering from rare diseases.
McGrath Toowoomba principal Toby Sandell, who will join Waugh on the ride, said he was nervous meeting the legendary cricketer.
“It’s a bit nerve-racking because he’s been one of the greatest cricket captains that Australia has ever seen, so having him here means a lot,” he said.
“It’s the first time the ride is in Queensland too, so it’s a privilege to have him.
“The Steve Waugh Foundation’s biggest fundraiser is the Captain’s Ride, it’s about 70 riders and each rider has a $10,000 fundraising target.”
Waugh sat down for a question-and-answer session, explaining highlights of his career and the significance of the baggy green to the Australian team.
“Organisations need to stand for something, whether it’s a couple of words or a symbol, and I felt that the baggy green gave us power,” he told the crowd.
“I suggested to (brother) Mark that during the first session of a Test match, we would all wear the baggy greens, to symbolise that we would be tough and hard to break down.”
