A KEY early crime prevention initiative run in Toowoomba by the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) will continue to operate with the help of funding under the Federal Government’s Safer Communities Fund.
Groom MP John McVeigh said the government would provide nearly $2 million under the Safer Communities Fund to support the ongoing work of eight PCYC Safer Communities Coordinators across Queensland, including in Toowoomba.
“This funding will support the critical work conducted by the PCYC’s Safer Communities Coordinator to provide a suite of tailored programs and activities, in partnership with community and police, to intervene early to help address the rates of youth crime in our region,” Dr McVeigh said.
“Up to 20 young people will participate in the program, working closely with the coordinator, local police and the community to help address the causes and likelihood of crime among young people in our community.”
Dr McVeigh said PCYC Queensland’s Safer Communities Program was one of six successful projects nationwide under Round 5 of the Safer Communities Fund early intervention stream.
“The Safer Communities Fund is a key program helping to keep young people in our communities safe and ensure they have somewhere to go to help them in reaching their full potential,” he said.
“This funding will assist groups such as the PCYC to continue the great work they are already doing in our community.”
