Highfields man among major winners of $50k photo awards

HIGHFIELDS photographer Peter Granfield was among the major winners in the 2020 Heritage Bank Photographic Awards.
Judges faced a tough decision choosing the winners as a prizemoney boost to $50,000 saw a jump of more than 60% in entries to a record amount this year.
Mr Granfield's image Osprey Over Wreck, taken on a trip to Fraser Island with his Canadian great nephew, took home the Alwyn Kucks Memorial Award for entrants residing within a 50km radius of Toowoomba.
He said he and his great nephew had camped close by to the disintegrating wreck of the SS Maheno so he could take photos at sunrise and sunset.
He said he was very pleased to win the award.
Meanwhile, New South Wales photographer Trung Nguyen won the $15,000 prize in the Open category for his image Swirling Sky featuring the iconic Central Coast lighthouse at Norah Head.
And Queensland's Peter Rossi took home $15,000 in winning the resilience-themed category for Standing Strong, a portrait of an Aboriginal artist named Leigh.
The annual Heritage Bank Photographic Awards are now in their 32nd year.
Heritage has acquired the top four winning entries from the open, mobile phone and themed categories, and the CEO's Choice Award to become part of its corporate art collection.
CEO's choice was awarded to Guy Draper, (Tanunder, South Australia) for his image Sowing after Drought, while Lola Ward (Brunswick, Victoria) won the 9 years and under Young Photographer award, Sonya Clarke (Beaumont Hills, New South Wales) won the 10-13 years award, and Darcy Schmidt (Kaimkillenbun) won the 14-17 years award.
