An adult humpback whale has died after it washed up on a Lennox Head beach on Saturday.
The whale, estimated to be 30 tonnes, was alive and in good condition when it was discovered in the early morning on Seven Mile Beach, a NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service spokesperson said.
Experts and volunteers from the NPWS, whale rescue service ORCCA, Sea World and the local council were on site to give first aid and keep the whale shaded.
As of Saturday afternoon the whale remained beached, however authorities had high hopes the whale would survive and a late high tide would wash it to sea.
The tide, however, was no match for the sheer weight of the whale and despite the tireless work of vets and rescuers, the whale could not be saved.
Vets informed NPWS the humpback had died at 7pm.
