On a day when we should celebrate Australia, groups of far left wing progressives will seek to hijack the day to advance woke political causes and campaign to abolish “Invasion Day.”
It comes as a conference entitled “National Symposium on Unifying Anti-Racist Research and Action” will be held in coming days in which “leading anti-racist researchers” will talk about supposed systemic racism in Australia.
In Sydney on Sunday, two protests are due to be staged with the expectation of drawing thousands of protesters – against Australia Day and also by pro-Palestinians.
The Sydney Palestine Action Group, which orchestrates weekly pro Palestine protests through the CBD, has pledged to join a rally at Belmore Park led by First Nations campaigners Blak Caucus whose members will fly the black, red and yellow Aboriginal flags and chant that the land “always was, always will be” Indigenous, from 10am on Sunday.
“This protest is a space for truth-telling, resistance, mourning and solidarity. Join us to honour our survival, demand justice, and fight for the liberation of all First Nations,” the Green Left newspaper states.
“January 26 marks the beginning of colonisation on our lands, leading to the violent dispossession of our ancestors and the continued oppression of our people today.
“The injustices we face are stark and ongoing.”
Hundreds of activists are being mobilised by Amnesty International Australia (AIA) to celebrate indigenous rights on “Invasion/Survival day” with a live music festival at the University of Sydney’s Manning House in Camperdown in Sydney’s Inner West.
“It’s time to take the crown,” organisers indigenous-led We Are Warriors state.
AIA have also called on anti-Australia Day protesters to join marches at Apex Park in Byron Bay, Bermagui Oval in Bermagui and an alternative “Survival Day” event organised by the Blue Mountains Aboriginal Culture & Resource Centre at North Public School in Katoomba.
Protests are also organised for Dickinson Oval in the Bega Valley Shire, Apex Park in Byron Bay and at the Kurrajong Centre in Narrandera on Sunday.
As well as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide are mobilising anti-Australia Day protesters to demand the date of the January 26 annual national celebration is changed arguing it marks the arrival of European settlers at Sydney Harbour in 1788.
Hard leftists and researchers will stage a two day convention of 16 speakers on Thursday unite in Brisbane to discuss “Invasion Day” at the National Symposium on Unifying Anti Racist research and Action event at which prominent advocate for the Palestinian cause and human rights lawyer Dr Sara Saleh, is expected to deliver a rousing speech.
The event to held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre in Magandjin by the QUT Carumba Institute is billed as encouraging participants to “engage in critical conversations around systemic racism and serves as a call to action … to eliminate institutional racism.”
“This inaugural symposium, in the lead up to Invasion Day, seeks to strategise a co-ordinated anti-racism agenda nationally which recognises that racism is not an anomaly; but rather systemic, institutional, and cultural, operating across various power dynamics,” said the institute’s executive director, Professor Chelsea Watego.
“While anti-Indigenous racism, Islamophobia, antisemitism, and anti-Blackness have unique expressions, they are deeply interconnected, making comprehensive and adaptable anti-racist research and strategies essential.”
Marches are also planned for Victoria at Little Malop St Mall in Geelong, at William Cooper Memorial Statue in Shepparton, for outside Parliament House in Melbourne, Jaycee Park and for Tasmania’s Elizabeth Street, Fogarty Park in Cairns, Queens Gardens in Brisbane, Adelaide’s Victoria Square, and Foundation Square in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast.
Of the Blak Caucus-led Sydney protest, the socialist Green Left newspaper states on its website: “Join us to honour our survival, demand justice, and fight for the liberation of all First Nations.”
“January 26 marks the beginning of colonisation on our lands, leading to the violent dispossession of our ancestors and the continued oppression of our people today. The injustices we face are stark and ongoing.
“We are over-policed and under-resourced. Our people are incarcerated at rates 14 times higher than non-Indigenous Australians, and systemic racism continues to deny us access to housing, healthcare, and opportunities,”
It goes on: “Changing the date will not fix anything – however this is the first and very necessary step towards abolishing Australia Day and the true reckoning that this country needs to have with the injustices that continue to cause suffering today.
“It is important in this election year to join these protests honouring survival, resistance and justice.”
