A chief political correspondent for the ABC told a Twitter user to “go f**k yourself” after they questioned the balance of the national broadcaster.

The tweet was spread by former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull who retweeted it adding “Tell us what you really think. Happy New Year Laura!”. He also included a winking emoji.

Tingle’s tweet was in response to a user tweeting at her “Pity about the lack of balance. #fakenews”.

That tweet had come after Tingle took to the social media platform to praise journalists at the ABC and regional outlets for their reporting of the fires.

“So proud of my colleagues across the country at @abcnews for the vital role they have been playing in keeping people informed in these terrible times. But a shout out, too, for all the other local media that are doing such a fantastic job, like the @MoruyaExaminer,” she had written.

When the user shot back at Tingle questioning the outlets “balance”, she responded with: “What, like, “on the other hand, it’s ONLY 4.6 million hectares of Australia that are burning”. A rare editorial engagement: go f**k yourself”.
