CORRECTIVE Services has launched a last-minute bid to stop a serial violent offender against women, known as the “playboy rapist,” from being released on parole two years before the end of his sentence.
A former girlfriend of Simon Monteiro, who was sentenced to 12 years for bashing and raping another woman, said she was pleased that Corrective Services were appealing the State Parole Authority’s decision to release him as early as next Tuesday.
A private hearing before the State Parole Authority will be held on Thursday.
“It is a great sign that the victims of Simon are being taken seriously in their very real fears regarding his release,” Kay Schubach said.
Ms Schubach says she was throttled by Monteiro during a two-month relationship with him in 2003. Other former girlfriends have also made complaints that they were attacked by Monteiro.
Monteiro was nicknamed the “playboy rapist” because he boasted of his modelling work and having dated Hollywood star Barbara Hershey.
In 2008 he was sentenced for 12 years for beating, raping and twice impregnating another girlfriend over an eight-month period in an eastern suburbs home.
Earlier this month the State Parole Authority ordered Monteiro be released sometime between January 30 and February 6, to live at his brother’s home and be monitored by Gosford Community Corrections.
The SPA ordered that Monteiro wear an electronic ankle bracelet to track his movements and banned him from entering Waverley, Woollahra and Randwick LGA where he committed the offences.
Upon announcing the SPA’s decision board chair Justice James Wood said the “Authority recognises his offending was serious.”
“Any risk is most likely to occur in the context of an intimate relationship and this will need to be monitored.”
In a media statement released today Correctives Services NSW said they will lodge submission with the SPA today seeking the revocation of Monteiro’s parole.
“CSNSW is seeking to have the matter listed for hearing at the SPA.
“Monteiro was convicted in December 2008 and sentenced in 2009 for a maximum of 12 years and three months for aggravated sexual intercourse without consent.
“On 9 January 2018, the SPA granted Monteiro parole, with a release date between 30 January and 6 February 2018, pending approval of a further CSNSW report on the suitability of post release accommodation.
More than 41,000 people have signed an online petition calling on authorities to revoke Monteiro’s release on parole.
Among the petitioners is Tom Meagher, the husband of Jill Meagher, who was murdered by serial rapist Adrian Bayley who raped up to two dozen women before killing the Irish woman as she walked home in Melbourne in 2012.
Mr Meagher wrote on the change.org petition, “my wife was murdered in Melbourne by a parolee just like this unrepentant creep. I spoke personally with the Adult Parole Board of Victoria at the time warning them of the egregious mistake of putting serial sex offenders like him back out to terrorize women.”
