Ministers and parliamentary secretaries will be banned from seeking or accepting commissions from property developers under legislation which passed parliament on Tuesday.
Labor will now attempt to extend the ban to all politicians, amid increasing scrutiny over what the Premier knew about disgraced MP Daryl Maguire’s business dealings.
On Tuesday the government agreed to support a Labor amendment – which passed the upper house last week – stating that “a Minister must not accept or seek payment of a commission from a property developer, either directly or through a third party”.
Following her evidence to the ICAC about Daryl Maguire, Premier Gladys Berejiklian has said MPs are allowed to have second jobs and receive extra income.
“Rightly or wrongly, MPs are allowed to do deals, they’re allowed to make money, so long as they disclose it in the proper way,” she told 2GB on Monday.

Deputy Labor Leader Yasmin Catley on Tuesday said that is “just wrong”.
“It is quite clear that (Ms Berejiklian) feels like there is nothing wrong with members of this parliament receiving sales commissions from property developers,” Ms Catley said.
With the government’s support, the amendment was agreed to by parliament without going to a vote.
Opposition Leader Jodi McKay will now attempt to ban any politician from getting commissions from a property developer, saying MPs “have a job to do”
“Their job is to represent their community, they should not be moonlighting with property developers and earning extra income when those very property developers are actually banned from donating to them,” she said.
