A week-long investigation into “horrific acts of cruelty” committed against 29 slaughtered chickens at an Illawarra High School has come to an abrupt end after the killer was revealed to be a fox.
Police were called to Corrimal High School, about an hour south of Sydney, at about 9.30am on Sunday, December 22, and discovered the chickens dead in their enclosure.
Inspector Allison Guthrie from Wollongong police district said the incident was deeply disturbing and said the animals were killed by a human between the hours of 2pm on the previous Friday and 9.30am on Saturday.
“These animals have been subjected to horrific acts of cruelty,” she said.
“It is clear this was not the act of a fox or a feral cat – these chickens were well cared for by the facility and for someone to do this is beyond belief.”
However, on Friday, police ended the investigation after “expert advice” revealed the birds had in fact been killed by one very hungry fox.
In a statement, police confirmed “there will be no further police action”.
