An email allegedly sent to junior NSW doctors from a roster manager accusing them of being “marshmallows” for putting “lifestyle before career” has triggered an apology from health authorities.
An email obtained by The Daily Telegraph shows an administration manager at Hunter New England Local Health District, which covers a swathe of the state ranging from Newcastle to the Mid North Coast, appearing to fire off insults over junior doctors requesting time off.
It’s understood the email was accidentally sent to JMOs – Junior Medical Officers, or junior doctors – who were starting their rotation at the John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle.
“Seriously!” the email reads.
“I wonder if any of them realise that they are a Doctor and that this is what happens.
“Oh that’s right … I forgot. Lifestyle before career.
“God help us in the future. We are going to have a workforce of clinical marshmellows! (sic).”
A Hunter New England Local Health District spokeswoman didn’t dispute the veracity of the email and said the authority had apologised to staff who had been criticised.
“Junior medical officers work hard and are a vital part of our health service, and we sincerely apologise for the hurt and frustration caused by a recent email that was circulated,” she said.
“We are committed to fostering a workplace where junior medical officers feel valued and respected.
“The email did not reflect this commitment or our values, and we have written to the relevant JMOs to apologise.
“The matter is being addressed appropriately.”
