EXCLUSIVE EXTRACT: Kyle and John’s unlikely friendship
IN a scene reminiscent of Reservoir Dogs — or perhaps another production close to his heart, Underbelly — Sydney identity John Ibrahim got the boys together last night to celebrate the release of the nightclub tsar’s autobiography.
On the eve of the launch of Last King of the X, Ibrahim gathered up some of his close mates for a drink at Palmer & Co, before moving on to dinner at Mr Wong.
Among the guests at the blokey get together was Channel Nine presenter and radio host Ben Fordham and Ibrahim’s good friend, radio shock jock, Kyle Sandilands, who features heavily in the book. Ibrahim and Sandilands arrived in a car with Shine Endemol boss Mark Fennessy.
Ibrahim also shared a private laugh with former TV boss Des Monaghan, who was among the inner circle, as was book publisher — and former Daily Telegraph journo — Angus Fontaine.
In an extract of his book released at the weekend, Ibrahim detailed the years of partying he and Sandilands enjoyed before the radio host fell for model Imogen Anthony.
“There are a million stories that go with Kyle and I living directly across the road from each other, but at one of our many parties he meets Imogen Anthony, and falls in love with her. And she moves in. For one half of us, the party is over.
“I know the exact moment it happened. I’m standing on the balcony off my bedroom at 11am admiring the view and sipping my morning coffee. I look to my right and I can hear Kyle’s garage door rolling up, which catches my attention. I’m watching him reverse his big-arse Bentley out, when all of a sudden Imogen in Ugg boots and a singlet jumps on the bonnet like a cat and screams out, “Where do you think you are going, you fat c…?” And then I see him drive back into his garage with her still on the bonnet. And the garage door is closed.
“After spitting out my coffee and nearly falling off the balcony from pissing myself laughing, I grab my phone and call him. When he answers, I can barely speak from laughing so hard.
“‘Don’t tell me you just saw all that. You did, didn’t you?” he says, and then whispers, “She weighs forty-five kilograms but I’m f…ing petrified of her.’”.
Usually intensely private, Ibrahim previously told Stellar Magazine he would rather write the book himself than have “someone with no idea and dubious sources do it”.
Others also on the guest list for the celebratory dinner included Fordham’s brother and agent Nick and KISS FM producer Bruno Bouchet.
