Jobs in Big Data, Cybersecurity and Internet of Things to spike post COVID

Australia needs to invest in local cybersecurity and information technology talent to meet the business and employment demands of a post-COVID economy.
Cybersecurity, the internet of Things and Big Data are among the top areas where employment will grow as the economy recovers from the pandemic, education and employment experts predict.
TAFE NSW head of Skillspoint technology and business services Geethani Nair said employers will want to hire people with skills in these areas and educate their existing workforce.

“There is a need for workers to be adaptable and flexible because organisations are becoming very flexible in the way they are operating,” Ms Nair said.
“They want adaptability, flexibility, creativity, innovation and critical thinking skills to be able to very quickly move from one business model to another. This is becoming the new norm.”
Ms Nair said in this new business landscape, it’s not just technical workers that need to have cybersecurity and IT skills, but the entire workforce.
“The business models have changed. Even what we have seen with healthcare workers, they now need to work in more virtual environments,” she said.

“COVID has accelerated the jobs of the future. We have seen that the reality is that things like artificial intelligence, internet of Things, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Robotics and Big Data, they will be really infiltrated in the very near work environment.
“These are the things that will also make us more resilient to future pandemics as well.”
She predicted that jobs in data analysis will be in high demand given more companies are moving online and gathering large amounts data.
Ms Nair said it crucial that Australia does not rely on overseas migration to fill these skills – particularly given the spike in unemployment from the pandemic.
“In Australia, it’s predicted there will be a huge skills shortage in a number of areas. COVID has highlighted that we need to focus on having those skills locally and not relying on the skills of other countries,” she said.
“As Australia’s unemployment rates grows to unprecedented rates, there will be need for the government to look at local employment and train our own people.
“We need skills coming from within instead of bringing people from overseas.”
TAFE information and communications technology teacher Matthew Cubis said professionals across the spectrum of industries now need to have IT skills.
“The demand in the industry not just for people specific to cybersecurity, but general staff to be aware of the types of issues they can be presented with when working from home is growing,” Mr Cubis said.
“We have to develop the skills onshore. There are security concerns around having people offshore doing cybersecurity for us … cybersecurity is something that needs to be fostered down here.”
