Iran’s ambassador to Australia has been hauled into a meeting by senior bureaucrats after he publicly praised the legacy of a terrorist.

Ahmad Sadeghi was ordered to meet with the Acting Secretary and Protocol Chief at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade after he made a social media post describing slain Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah as a “remarkable leader”.

His comments were condemned by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, the Opposition and Jewish organisations.

At the meeting, Mr Sadeghi was reminded of the obligation to respect Australian law and to stay out of domestic affairs.

Hezbollah is a designated terror organisation in Australia.

Mr Albanese resisted calls to remove Mr Sadeghi from his post but condemned the comments.

The meeting comes as both state and federal government and police remind protesters that illegal activity — including inciting violence or promoting terror organisations — will not be condoned on Monday at protests marking the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks in Israel.

Mr Sadeghi has previously been called for a similar meeting after calling Israelis a “Zionist plague”.

Those comments were described by Mr Albanese as “abhorrent” and “hateful”.
